Gideon appointed Charles Webb as deputy sheriff with the special assignment of keeping watch on the Hardin crowd. Meantime, Hardin learned of the demands of the Brown county men on the Sheriff and boasted that he would not ease his activities.” (The Nice and Nasty in Brown County by Ruth Griffin Spence pg 28) Webb was shot by Hardin in May of 1974. “In 1874 J H Gideon, Sheriff of Brown Co appointed Charles Webb as deputy sheriff to watch the Hardin Gang.” (Something about Brown, A History of Brown Co, TX by T R Havins, Banner Printing Co, Brownwood, TX pg 24) Robbery was a common crime. Five times during September and October 1875, the stagecoach from Fort Worth was robbed between Brownwood and Comanche. (Something About Brown, A History of Brown County, Texas, b,y T R Havins, Banner Printing CO, Brownwood, TX pg 30) Settlers were upset about him not quelling the rustling. “The State of Texas, County of Brown: January 31, 1882, now on this day come on to be heard the application of Mrs H C Gideon for administration upon the Community Estate of J H Gideon, deceased and it appearing to the Court that Administration is necessary upon Said Estate, and that the Said Mrs H C Gideon is the Surviving wife of the Said J H Gideon Deceased and has filed in this court a good and Sufficient Bond as administrator of Said Estate in the Sum of two hundred and Seventy five dollars the amount as appraised by John J Ramey and W H Martin appraisers appointed by this court of Said Estate, which Bond is hereby approved by the court it is therefore ordered by the court that the Said Mrs H C Gideon have the management and control and disposal of Said Estate and that the Bond and Inventory be recorded. The birthplace of Colt firearms is Hartford, Conn. However, the company first gained prominence when Texas Rangers used Colt revolvers in their battles with the Comanche. A Colt 6-shooter called, “The Peacemaker” became the handgun of choice among citizens of the Western plains. In 1870, legislation was passed banning the carrying of concealed handguns in Texas but the public did not widely follow the law until the 1880s. A letter written in 1876 by Brown County officials to the governor of Texas, Richard Coke, is an example of the gradual shift away from concealed handguns. Having become thoroughly satisfied it is no longer necessary to allow the carrying of pistols in Brown County we respectfully ask a suspension of that law... Our county has settled very rapidly in the last few months and when lawless men are disarmed we will have no trouble enforcing law and order. Besides that, law-abiding citizens are more liable to commit crime when allowed to carry 6-shooters. With the assurance it will work no hardship on any citizen and in our judgment prevent the commission of crime... I agree. There are several children of JH Gideon missing, as are quite a few of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. I am happy to know more about Nancy Emma although I'm descended from Miley Gideon.
